Working from an original conversational audio made this project fascinating, as I had to pay attention to the sound of someone’s voice and the atmosphere around them.
Once I had the audio, I began creating a mood board containing themes of queerness, clowns, and the sea. I wanted to incorporate their eccentric makeup and clothing styles into my art, so I began sketching characters.
Each sketch was created with a different medium, testing what textures I could force out of the tool. This task allowed me to explore different ways of working, as I was not controlled by the pressure of a perfect outcome.
My inspirations throughout the mood boards and character designs resided in galleries I visited, artists I enjoy, movies I grew up on, and natural surroundings. Shadows and reflections have always interested me, as I have always wondered how something can appear entirely different when mirrored onto another subject. I like this idea thoroughly and have applied this to our perception on various matters, such as clowns or being underwater, both can threaten you, scare you, but to me they feel comforting and I enjoy moving away from stigmas and creating something based on my enjoyment, now, how it may be perceived.
